He recently testified to the House of Representatives about the critical nature of U.S. relations with Europe, the three highest priorities being "European engagement on global challenges; a Europe that is whole, free, and at peace; and a renewed relationship with Russia." [1] The Assistant Secretary reports to the Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs.

Previous assistant secretaries

The position title has changed several times, in the list below, going back to 1965. Before the present title, it has been "Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs" and "Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs". Canadian affairs are now part of the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.
