Fired from 40mm, single-shot grenade launchers (e.g., M79, M203 or M320), the M1006 sponge round is the U.S. Army designation for a cartridge intended for situations where minimal force is required. An example of what is sometimes called a "beanbag" munition, the M1006 is expected to give a strong, stunning blow to a human body, to disable at standoff ranges. Nevertheless, it must be understood that the projectile can kill under some circumstances, such as hitting a vulnerable part of the body when fired at close range. Intended minimum engagement range is 10 to 15 meters, and maximum effective range is 50 meters. Velocity at 50 meters is 200 feet per second. References
