North Catalonia or Northern Catalonia or historically the Counties (in Catalan Catalunya Nord, la Catalunya del Nord, els Comtats; in French la Catalogne Nord, la Catalogne du Nord, les Comtés) is the northernmost region of the Catalan Countries (or Catalonia).
It belongs politically to France, where it nearly matches with the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales, excepting the Occitan-speaking area of the Fenouillèdes.
North Catalonia is not an administrative subdivision but a region defined by cultural and historical criteria.
Its main city is Perpignan.
