Oakton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, in the United States of America. The population was 29,348 at the 2000 census. The ZIP code is 22124.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 25.1 km² (9.7 mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 29,348 people, 11,118 households, and 7,649 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,168.2/km² (3,024.1/mi²). There were 11,392 housing units at an average density of 453.5/km² (1,173.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 74.46% White, 4.79% African American, 0.20% Native American, 13.83% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 3.08% from other races, and 3.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.65% of the population.
There were 11,118 households out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 34.9% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.0 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $87,898, and the median income for a family was $104,385. Males had a median income of $62,434 versus $48,096 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $43,297. About 3.6% of families and 4.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
Education
There are two public schools located in Oakton: Oakton Elementary School and Waples Mill Elementary School. Flint Hill School, a private high school, also is located in Oakton.
Oakton High School, the town's high school, is actually located in neighboring Vienna.
Public Works
Oakton Public Library
The groundbreaking for the Oakton Library took place on Saturday, April 8, 2006.
- The $52.5 million library bond passed by Fairfax County voters in November 2004 will finance the construction of two branches, the renovation of four of the oldest branches, the updating or repair of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other subsystems in existing branches, and the preliminary design for renovations of other branches.
- The Oakton Library is one of the two new branches to be built with library bond funds. The decision to build the branch was based on factors such as projected population growth, library usage and demand for service. It will be located in Providence District, which is projected to have a 15 percent growth in population by 2020.
- The Oakton Library will be an approximately 17,000 square-foot branch located at 10304 Lynnhaven Place, just off of Hunter Mill Road. Construction is expected to begin in early 2006 and be completed in October 2007.
- The Oakton Library will help relieve some of the burden on the Patrick Henry Library, which is the busiest of the system’s smaller branches. Last year, this Vienna-based branch made more than 575,000 loans of books and materials, and was visited more than 301,400 times. This library has 54 schools in its service area, and it also serves students from other districts. Customers frequently complain about lack of parking.
Cross County Trail
The Cross County Trail (CCT) passes through Oakton, continuing on through the rest of Fairfax County. In August, 1976, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopted the Countywide Trail Plan as part of the county's Comprehensive Plan. The Park Authority maintains and operates most of the stream valley trails throughout the county, some of which are significant.
