Image: AN-PRC-148.jpg|left|thumb|200px|Enhanced (JTRS) AN/PRC-148 The AN/PRC-148 Multiband Inter/Intra Team Radio (MBITR), which covers the HF through VHF spectrum, is the first widely defined military software-defined radio. It preceded the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS), although the AN/PRC-148 JEM version is JTRS compatible. Physically, the basic version is handheld, but can be plugged into vehicle or base station mounts that give greater power. Its initial user was United States Army Special Forces, then the overall United States Special Operations Command, United States Marine Corps|U.S. Marine Corps, and then more general use pending the delivery of JTRS units. Electronically, it covers the 30-512 MHz frequency range, is compatible with SINCGARS ground and HAVE QUICK II air tactical communications, and includes built-in encryption. It has low-speed data transmission capability, and operates in ground-to-ground, ground-to-air, and satellite communications.
