U-2 Incident [r]: On 1 May 1960, an American U-2 reconnaissance aircraft was shot down over the Soviet Union. This led to an international furor, in which President Dwight D. Eisenhower took personal responsibility, and General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev cancelled an upcoming summit meeting. ^[e]
