Talk:Christmas/Catalogs/Hymns and carols

Does anyone know (for certain) the status of Christmas Carols and the Public Domain? My understanding was that if you know the words by heart you're free to write them down (same with the music if you want to write down your own arrangement and scan it in) but I'd like to be sure.
