It came from several mergers, in a general consolidation of the US military industry
Recently, in January 2009, it reorganized into five sectors:

It is the only US company that makes and refuels nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two companies that design and build nuclear-powered submarines.
Major programs include:
- USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), a large-deck, nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier
- Next-generation Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, featuring a new nuclear propulsion plant and technologies that revolutionize flight deck operations and greatly reduce manning levels
- Virginia-class nuclear attack submarine, designed for open ocean combat and for littoral operations including surveillance, anti-submarine warfare and special operations support
- Burke-class destroyer,
- Zumwalt-class destroyer, an experimental proof-of-concept class for which production has been capped,
- San Antonio-class (LPD 17) Landing Platform Dock ship for amphibious warfare
- Coast Guard cutters
