Peshawar is the capital of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and it was the capital of the former North-West Frontier Province. In the 2000s, it had an estimated population of 2.4 million Pakistanis and 400,000 Afghans, spread over 1.257 square kilometres.

History
Peshawar was founded by the Kushan kings of Gandhara. Emperor Babur of the Moghul Empire came to Peshawar in 1530. The city's name is derived from a Sanskrit word 'Pushpapura', meaning the city of flowers, and its flowers were mentioned in Babar's memoirs.
