Unless th eterminology has changed recently, ''pieces'' refers to KQRBN, not pawns, & the general term is ''men''.
I've deleted the reference to the Digha Nikaya, as it's a mistranslation. It simply refers to 8-square boards & there's no reason to interpret it as referring to a game not otherwise attested until centuries later. I think Murray makes this point.
