Properties pages were developed to try and keep the enormous compilations of physical, chemical, and other properties data off of the main pages of articles. Significant debate regarding how to implement this has transpired[1]. As of May 2010, it still appears no consensus has been reached regarding keeping these pages.
A large number of "subpages" currently exist to store this data, and reuse it on other "pages" as well. In particular, Periodic table of elements, Alkali_metal/Properties, {{Periodic Table of Properties}}, and similar articles/pages/templates seem to benefit from this technique.
