Obersturmbannfuhrer was a rank in the Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS), roughly equivalent to lieutenant colonel, or, in the German army rank structure, [Oberstlieutnant]]. The next more senior rank was Standartenfuhrer, while the next lower rank was Sturmbannfuhrer.
For SS military formations, it would be the rank of a battalion commander.
