Some people think that the names of currencies are capitalised. Why is this? Probably because they often sound like proper nouns: franc, for example, or mark. Of course those two have now (almost) vacated the scene in favour of the equally capitalised-sounding euro.

Thorperson

Robert Thorpe, born in London in 1950, living in Esposende, Portugal. I have a degree in English from Peterhouse, Cambridge. For many years I worked as a teacher of the language, in Mâcon, France (at a lycée agricole); Mondovì, Italy; Beckenham, England; and finally in various locations in Portugal, where my girlfriend is a primary school teacher. I can translate from the relevant languages as well as from Spanish, German and Latin.

I came across Citizendium when I looked in Wikipedia for the latter's history. There, I still do copyediting, and I created a number of articles.
