In most countries of the world, the term ''World Cup'' is taken to mean the [[FIFA World Cup]] in [[football]], usually called simply '''the World Cup'''.
The ''FIFA World Cup'', also called the ''Football World Cup'' and usually abbreviated to simply the '''World Cup''' is a tournament held every four years under the auspices of the ''Fédération Internationale de Football Association'' (FIFA), the governing body.  The competition has been held every four years since 1930, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, when it was not held due to the [[World War II|Second World War]].  It is the most widely-viewed sporting event on [[television]].


The [[2010 World Cup|2010 World Cup]] was contested in [[South Africa]]; the finals was held on Sunday 11th July 2010 between [[The Netherlands]] and [[Spain]] and won by Spain 1-0 after Andrés Iniesta scored in the 116th minute.
However, the term is also used to describe other sporting events, and, less frequently, to denote World Cup style competitions, that is, contests in which national teams represent their countries.


The 2014 World Cup will be held in [[Brazil]].

However, the term is also used to describe other sporting events, and, less frequently, to denote World Cup style competitions, that is, contests in which national teams represent their countries.
