He was a partner in the Roxie Cinema in San Francisco 1976-1984, and founded the historic preservation group Friends of 1800 Market in 1997. The latter group raised $1.5 million to get the SF LGBT Center to preserve an 1894 Victorian on its site, and has worked on various other SF preservation issues.

He has written films reviews for many printed and online periodicals, including East Bay Voice, San Francisco Call, Castro Star, Western Edition, New Mission News, BFI Film Bulletin, North Mission News, San Francisco Odalisque, New Bernal Journal, and others. He has worked as a technical writer for various software companies, and is currently working in provider relations for an SF mental health nonprofit.
