Australopithecus anamensis is an early hominid species first described by Maeve G. Leakey and colleagues in 1995 out of Kanapoi, Kenya. Argon isotope dating and the discovery of fossils below and within the Moiti tuff date A. anamensis as living during the early Pliocene, approximately 4.9 to 3.9 million years ago.
