Prior to 1975, the People's Army of Viet Nam (PAVN) was the regular military of the Communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV). It was also known as the North Vietnamese Army (NVA).
After the PAVN conquered the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), and forcibly reunified the countries, the PAVN remained the name of the military.
