Bowdoin College is a is an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational residential, undergraduate liberal arts institution founded in 1794, located near Brunswick, Maine. It has approximately 1700 students. Perhaps its most distinguished alumnus and faculty member was Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who became its President after returning from military leave in the American Civil War.
For its size, it has a surprisingly high number of graduates in influential positions in American government and interest groups.
