An ionic liquid is any of a class of highly polar solvents composed of ions which are liquid at low temperature because they have melting points less than 100ºC. The number and variety of organic reactions that use ionic liquids continues to rapidly increase because their negligible vapor pressure, non-flammability, high ionic conductivity, and ability to be easily recovered and recycled allows them to help protect the environment and human health.
