France is a Western Europe country, officially known under the name 'French Republic'. It also comprises various overseas islands and territories located on other continents. France has existed in various forms for centuries. It is a member of the European Union and NATO.
Geography
Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. Metropolitan France is also referred as the 'Hexagon' because of its geometric shape.

France is also linked to the United Kingdom by the Channel Tunnel, which passes underneath the English Channel.

Politics
The French Republic is a democracy. It has a bicameral parliament which is divided into the National Assembly and the Senate. The Assembly has 577 'deputies', elected every 5 years, while the senate has 331 senators, elected for a 3-year term.
Economy
France has a highly-developed industrial economy, one of the largest in the world. It is a member of the G8, a group of the largest and most influential industrial countries in the world.
