The Capability Maturity Model or Capability Maturity Model for Software (CMM or SW-CMM) was a model created by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) for assessing and guiding process improvement across a project, a division, or an entire organization. It was adopted by organizations worldwide, and primarily by software development companies.

The CMM has since been retired and superceded by the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) which replaces it. The CMM is no longer maintained by the SEI. [1]
