I'm a baby-boomer Canadian currently working in China. I've spent two substantial chunks of my career as a teacher — 1978-83 and 2002-10 — mainly because that is a good way to support travel. At other times I've worked in computing, mostly as a technical writer but a bit of everything else too. My current job is as a technical editor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, improving the English in papers by Chinese graduate students that are about to be submitted to journals or conferences.

I am quite active on Wikitravel, where I'm an admin, and sometimes contribute to other wikis. See my Wikitravel user page.

I am very interested and involved with computer security and cryptography (see Biography below).

Biography

Academic credentials:

  • BA in Psychology from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada in 1966
  • Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada in 1997
  • Some work toward a Master Philosophy in computational linguistics at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, but did not complete that degree.

  • I973 - 1983: Teaching
  • 2002 - 2010: Teaching.
  • Currently working as a technical editor in the Computer Science & Engineering Department at Shanghai Jiaotong University in China , improving the English of papers (mainly by PhD candidates) that will be submitted to international journals or conferences. See here.
  • Wrote most of the documentation for the FreeA/Swan project which is a Linux implementation of the IPsec encryption protocols. I have permission to re-use that text here, see User_talk:Sandy_Harris/Permission, which I have done by writing the Citizendium article of FreeSWAN.
