A novelette is a work of prose fiction somewhere in length between a short story and a novella and considerably shorter than a "full length" novel. One writer's association defines it as being between 7,500 and 17,499 words in length[1] although some dictionaries define it as being the same as a novella. It is a frequent length for science-fiction stories published in magazines, which generally pay a lower word rate for novelettes than they do for short stories but higher than they do for novellas.
