William James was an American philosopher and psychologist. Along with Charles Sanders Peirce and John Dewey, he is known for being one of the primary proponents of pragmatism, a school of philosophy with origins in the United States which equates truth with usefulness. James wrote prolifically on the subject of religious experience.

William James' brother was Henry James, who was a novelist.
