The World Boxing Council (WBC) was founded in Mexico City, where it is still based, on 22 July 1963. It has over 160 national association members. The WBC is the second oldest of the four global professional boxing bodies which arrange world title fights, the other three being the World Boxing Association (WBA; founded 1921), the International Boxing Federation (IBF; 1983) and the World Boxing Organisation (WBO; 1988). The first World Heavy Championship fight sanctioned by the WBC was on 25 February 1964 when Muhammad Ali defeated Sonny Liston.
