A wounded veteran of World War II, he was a conservative known for his acerbic tongue. In the 1976 presidential election he was chosen by President Gerald Ford to be his running mate as the Republican Party nominee for Vice President. They lost a close election to Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale. Dole attempted to obtain the presidential nomination in 1980 and 1988, but it was not until 20 years later, in the presidential election of 1996, that he became the Republican nominee for President. He was beaten decisively by the incumbent, Bill Clinton.
