Georgia is one of the 13 states of the United States of America that declared themselves independent on the fourth of July 1776. Georgia declared its secession from the Union on January 19, 1861, as the fifth of the original seven Confederate States of America. After the American Civil War it joined the Union again on July 15, 1870.

Georgia's area is 58,910 square miles (152,576 square kilometers) and its estimated population is 9,685,744 (in 2008). Georgia is bordered on the south by Florida; on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina; on the west by Alabama and by Florida in the extreme southwest; and on the north by Tennessee and North Carolina.

The state capital and largest city is Atlanta.
