Müller holds the national goal-scoring record for Germany, with 68 goals in 62 international appearances. He also scored 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga matches, and holds a record of 66 goals in 74 European Club appearances. Between 1974 and 2006 Müller also held the record for most goals scored in World Cup games.
