A 501(c)(3) nonprofit think tank for American libertarianism, the Reason Foundation publishes Reason (magazine). Founded in 1968, it advances a free society by developing, applying, and promoting libertarian principles, including individual liberty, free markets, and the rule of law." The founder was Robert W. Poole, Jr., David Nott is the current presiden and Matt Welch is editor-in-chief of Reason.

While it supports the philosophy of libertarianism, it is not associated with the Libertarian Party or any other political group.

In addition to its magazine, it arranges for expert speakers and presents web pages and Internet videos.
