South America is a continent with around 370 million peoples and several nation states which owe their origins to national wars of independence fought in the early 19th century. South America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, one of the first Europeans to suggest that the America's were not the East Indies as first thought, but an entirely New World undiscovered by Europeans.
