It seems, von Neumann's main motivation to build the first computer was basically, to be able to simulate systems described by nonlinear partial differential equations, since, he argued, these are very important, but analog computing devices (widely used in that time) will never be able to do so. Boris this is an excerpt from a page of the indicated book as shown on the Amazon website. As soon as you have read it and made a note of the book source (author, title, edition, publisher, year page, ISBN), I will then ask for deletion of this screen shot since it is copyrighted and no permission to use it as an image has been granted.
