  • The Ombudsman shall be nominated by the Combined Councils and appointed by majority Citizen vote.

Add when the OMB should be elected.. same time as EC?

  • The Ombudsman shall be nominated by the Combined Councils and appointed by majority Citizen vote at the same time that the Editorial Council elections occur.

  • The Ombudsman shall be nominated by the Combined Councils and appointed by majority Citizen vote at the same time that the Editorial Council elections occur. Any citizen in good standing may be nominated for Ombudsman. The Ombudsman may select a gender neutral or gender specific variant of the title.

Above is missing some things:

  • Candidates for Ombudsman shall be nominated by the Combined Councils.
  • The Ombudsman shall be elected by majority Citizen vote.
  • Any citizen in good standing may be nominated for Ombudsman.

*The Ombudsman may select a gender neutral or gender specific variant of the title.

Agree with 1st three. "Ombudsman" is already gender neutral. Howard C. Berkowitz 21:40, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Same here — don't think the fourth is Charter level. Capitalized "Combined Councils". --Daniel Mietchen 21:59, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Since when was der Herr gender neutral? "Remember the ladies" as Abigail Adams said. I'm not going to vote in favor of striking the prerogative of giving a female ombudsMAN the right to change the title to ombudsperson or ombudswoman if that is to their liking. You'll have to pass this one without me. It's fine otherwise. Russell D. Jones 00:26, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
My Swedish friends tell me a good original translation is "commissioner."
As far as Elefanten, having had the unusual experience of watching an elephant lose his virginity, I can testify that neither participant was gender-neutral. Howard C. Berkowitz 04:03, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
We had this discussion about gender neutrality months ago when the OMB idea was introduced into the Charter concept, and my suggestion to go for "Ombudsperson" was rejected then. I would still feel better with it than with Ombudsman. --Daniel Mietchen 11:52, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Replaced #4:

  • Candidates for Ombudsman shall be nominated by the Combined Councils.
  • The Ombudsman shall be elected by majority Citizen vote.
  • Any citizen in good standing may be nominated for Ombudsman.
  • The Ombudsman may select a gender neutral or gender specific variant of the title.

I still have problems with #4. When it comes to gender neutrality, the better approach, in my opinion, is to change words rather than awkward inventions: "performer" vice "actor" and "actress". "Server" vice "waiter" and "waitress". The "man" in "ombudsman" isn't English. "Citizens' Commissioner" has unfortunate reminders of totalitarianism.
What about a simple "Mediator"? "Mediator & Privacy Advocate"? Howard C. Berkowitz 14:17, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Mediator would be fine with me. What about "Ombud"? I'm basically fine with any term we can agree on, but I would like to avoid a provision of the "may choose their own title" sort in the Charter. --Daniel Mietchen 20:53, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Honestly, my first thought on seeing "ombud" was "where is that in a flower?" Why invent words? Howard C. Berkowitz 21:14, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

<undent>This is dead. Just go with what we've got. Russell D. Jones 21:24, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
