Winthrop University is an independent, public, four-year liberal arts university in Rock Hill, South Carolina, not far from Charlotte, North Carolina. Winthrop was founded in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1886 as a teachers' college and named for the Massachusetts philanthropist Robert C. Winthrop, who donated the first $1500 to fund it.
