Among the world's most prestigious schools of engineering, the California Institute of Technology ("Caltech") is located in Pasadena, California. It also is an authoritative center in pure sciences.

Caltech operates, under contract to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). JPL is the major research and operations center concerned with deep space missions beyond Earth orbit.
