IJN Shigure was a Japanese destroyer in the Second World War that survived more naval battles than any other Japanese warship, before being torpedoed by an American submarine while on a routine convoy escort mission. She was the only survivor of the Battle of Vella Gulf and of the Battle of Surigao Strait and an escort mission for the aircraft carrier IJN Unryū. On a much more mundane duty, she was lost on January 24, 1945, to a submarine torpedo while escorting cargo ships off Malaya. [1] After withstanding battleship fire, she was sunk by a torpedo from USS Blackfin (SS-322).

Of the Shiratsuyu-class, she was built in the late 1930s, had a displacement of 1980 tons and a maximum speed of 34 knots. Her armament included five 5"-50 caliber dual-purpose guns, a large number of antiaircraft autocannon and machine guns, torpedo tubes for the deadly Long Lance, and depth charges.[2]
