Pirithous [r]: From Greek mythology, he was a friend of Theseus who accompanied the Athenian hero to Tartaros to try to kidnap Persephone to be the wife of Pirithous. Theseus was trapped there many years until Heracles set him free, but Pirithous was trapped there forever, according to Elizabeth Vandiver, Classics scholar and authority on Greek mythology and Greek tragedy including the Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, Homer, and Virgil. This definition is based on her course Classical Mythology from The Teaching Company.
