Looks like a beautiful city

A great place to be from! --D. Matt Innis 12:02, 9 January 2008 (CST)

Burke and Hare

William Burke (1792-1829) and William Hare (1904-ca 1860)

The article says that Burke was hanged in 1828, which is correct? I assume Hare is 1804? Chris Day (talk) 11:02, 10 January 2008 (CST)

RLS

I note you mention Deacon Brodie inspired RLS to write Jekyll and Hyde. There is an Island in the centre of the pond at Queens Street gardens that was the inspiration for Treasure Island, that might be of interest to add in there too? Possibly in the new town section? Also worth adding is the colonies were built by the craftsmen who built the New Town. Chris Day (talk) 11:02, 10 January 2008 (CST) (some sources for the Treasure island inspiration but probably need a better one Scotsman Herald Photo of island)

Other things off the top of my head

  1. Edinburgh Academy, Heriots, Fettes, etc might be mentioned. This high concentration of private schools seems quite unique (I could be wrong). Possibly in the wealthy city.
  2. Meadows was the mass burial ground for the plague victims. The pitch and putt by the Golf pub is reputed to be the first place golf was ever played (doneGareth Leng 12:30, 14 January 2008 (CST)). [edit: according to this reference the mass burial is the hand me down version of the story]
  3. Should the the Observatory get a mention somewhere? And possibly the density of golf courses which seems on the high side for an average city.(doneGareth Leng)
  4. Meadowbank, Hearts and Hibs should be in there somewhere.(doneGareth Leng 05:06, 11 January 2008 (CST))
  5. And the Seven Hills of Edinburgh should be in there too.
  6. The one-o-clock gun (doneGareth Leng 05:06, 11 January 2008 (CST))
  7. Greyfriars Bobby (doneGareth Leng 05:06, 11 January 2008 (CST))
  8. Rose street and Grassmarket might be worth a mention with respect to pubs, and a nod to the Sheep's Heid Inn, is it really Scotlands oldest pub, as they claim? (doneGareth Leng 07:10, 11 January 2008 (CST)) The breweries, especially due the he smell!
  9. Radical road, especially with respect to Huttons unconformity in the quarry.(done Gareth Leng 07:20, 11 January 2008 (CST))

I'm sure there is a lot more but these seem like obvious ommisions for someone trying to get a flavor of the city. Chris Day (talk) 11:02, 10 January 2008 (CST)

Many thanks Chris, please feel free to pitch in. I guess the sections on Musems, Hotels, Tourist attractions could all go to subpages which might start to make it feel less intimidating. Any help most welcome, I'm running out of steam.Gareth Leng 11:19, 10 January 2008 (CST)

What you have so far is a great read. I agree we should get the touristy stuff into subpages. Also, most of my comments above are "local knowledge" I'd have to get sources for them, I already found my plague comment is exaggerated. Chris Day (talk) 11:46, 10 January 2008 (CST)

Excellent article

Great work! I'd add in the Camera Obscura, maybe, to the tourist attractions? Anton Sweeney 18:38, 10 January 2008 (CST)

Thanks for the reminder, done, and will add a comment on it in due courseGareth Leng
"and a pier with a camera obscura was built in 1871"... Oh - I didn't know about that one! I was actually talking about the currently extant one near the castle. Its on the main road up to it, and is the main feature in a museum of optical illusions. Anton Sweeney 18:19, 11 January 2008 (CST) (I added a link on the subpage, but it deserves an expanded noteGareth Leng 04:01, 12 January 2008 (CST))

Jokes

Obviously the article at present contains some jokes, they are overtly jokes not jokes masquerading as facts, and they served simply as a scaffold for me to make writing this a bit more fun. Having served that purpose they could now go, if others feel that these touches aren't appropriate, or stay if others feel they add to the pleasure of reading. I just want to say here that I don't mind; as far as I'm concerned this is a Citizendium article not mine, so no-one should feel constrained to render their opinion on this or any other aspect of the article. My skin is not thin, and I'll serve what seems to be a general will.Gareth Leng 08:01, 16 January 2008 (CST)

I like a good joke, myself, and think the tone of the article is great fun. Aleta Curry 15:06, 21 January 2008 (CST)

External links

I've just thought of something--external links aren't supposed to be in the body of the text, if I recall correctly, so this will need to be changed when the article goes for approval. Aleta Curry 15:15, 21 January 2008 (CST)

Thanks, am doing thisGareth Leng 03:14, 31 January 2008 (CST)

Questions

What is meant by "Second only to London"? In what sense? As a cultural centre in the UK, maybe. In what other sense? If it is the most prosperous city in the UK, as the text claims, then in that sense it is not second but first. And what does prosperous mean? Highest income per capita? Smallest proportion of residents below the poverty line? Also there is no mention of the rivalry with Glasgow, which has been know to claim the title of the UK's second city. --Martin Wyatt 17:27, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

As I think has Birmingham. Peter Jackson 15:41, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, good calls - sorry about broken link. Second most prosperous on GDP per capita; I'll look for a better source when I have time.Gareth Leng (talk) 15:56, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
