 Definition:  A type of leukocyte (i.e., white blood cells) that is associated with chronic inflammatory response. It digests foreign cells using the mechanism of phagocytosis, and both circulates in the blood, but later attaches to tissue as a part of local immune response. [d] [e]

Monocyte vs macrophage

Most sources seem to agree that monocytes circulate, transform to circulating macrophages, and then the macrophages enter tissue. The only thing I've seen to the contrary, according to the Merck Manual, is that monocytes only become macrophages when they enter tissue. Anything to this?Howard C.
