Welcome to the Citizendium! We hope you will contribute boldly and well. Here are pointers for a quick start. You'll probably want to know how to get started as an author. Just look at Getting Started for other helpful "startup" links, our help system and CZ:Home for the top menu of community pages. Be sure to stay abreast of events via Twitter. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forum is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any administrator for help, too. Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and have fun!

You can find some more information about our collaboration groups if you follow this link Citizendium_Pilot:Discipline_Workgroups. Look at the left bar and you'll find other useful links. You can always ask me on my talk page or others about how to proceed or any other question you might have.

Kind Regards, Chris Day (Talk) 16:10, 14 February 2007 (CST)

I'm in the department of Microbiology at your campus. Cheers David Tribe 08:20, 6 April 2007 (CDT)
Can I stop by your department sometime and pester you with lots and lots of questions? Microbiology isn't my field exactly, but it does fascinate me ... --Louise Valmoria 15:56, 12 August 2007 (CDT)

Thanks for volunteering for wikiconversion of word-processor files

Louise, thank you for volunteering. Your joining makes an even dozen. We might have a big enough group that we can start advertising the service in our recruitment drives. --Anthony.Sebastian (Talk) 11:23, 3 November 2007 (CDT)

New Workgroups / Philanthropy Workgroup? / Workgroup Mailing List Discussion

I've been reviewing the workgroup lists as there are two mailing lists that need to be added--for Robotics and Food Science--I intend to set these up today, although I would like to know if there are have been any names put forward for editors under these groups. I also note the appearance of a new Philanthrophy Workgroup on this page. Is this a confirmed new workgroup so I may set up a new list as appropriate? Thanks. --Louise Valmoria 10:30, 18 November 2007 (CST)

Philanthropy is not confirmed. The way to go about adding workgroups is to place requests with rationales at CZ:New_Workgroup_Requests. There are soon going to be lots more workgroups created, all at once, through process of the Editorial Council. Cheers, Stephen Ewen 01:00, 5 December 2007 (CST)
Thanks for the clarification, Stephen. I'm not a part of the Editorial Council, but I do create the mailing lists; is there a particular page that I need to watch to be aware of the new workgroup names, or can I get a heads-up as to the names of the new workgroups so I may can quickly set up mailing lists on Mailman as appropriate? Cheers,--Louise Valmoria 06:57, 5 December 2007 (CST)

Mailing list for submitting requests for MediaWiki markup

Louise, I responded to your excellent suggestion where you put it on my Talk page. --Anthony.Sebastian (Talk) 16:59, 18 November 2007 (CST)

Louise, any further thoughts? --Anthony.Sebastian (Talk) 17:43, 23 November 2007 (CST)

Louise, no comments from the group, so I assume no issues. 'cz-wikiformat' sounds okay to me for name of mailing list. I can notify each volunteer to sign up, and we can put the announcement on the general list asking them again to sign up, and asking for additional volunteers.
Any further suggestions. Larry will be pleased when we can advertise the service, on the main page and elsewhere. --Anthony.Sebastian (Talk) 21:05, 3 December 2007 (CST)

Re 'wiki-converting'

Louise: Regarding your volunteering to 'wiki-convert' word-processor files from subscribers, please see: http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Wiki-converting. For tracking, use section with your name as title. --User_talk:Anthony.Sebastian

Your note of 01/01/2008 on my Talk page, and my reply:

Hi Anthony, thanks for the nudge on the Citizendium-L list to get remaining volunteers to sign up to the list. I have just checked through the membership list and there are 15 mailing list members, not all of them on the volunteer list, but hopefully they will contribute as well. The project should be ready to advertise whenever you see it fit.
There are a couple of issues with spam on some of the other CZ mailing lists at the moment, so for initial launch we'll need to notify that non-member postings will be held for approval before sent through to the list, but all legitimate postings will get sent through fairly quickly. Many thanks for organising this, Anthony! Louise Valmoria 13:48, 1 January 2008 (CST)
Thanks, Louise. Do you have some way I can keep track of the subscribers to the list: http://mail.citizendium.org/mailman/listinfo/cz-wikiformat? The reason I ask: I would like to contact those subscribers who have not put their names on the volunteer list to confirm/disconfirm their willingness to serve as wiki-converters, and I would like to make sure all who have volunteered have subscribed to the list.
Re monitoring the list for legitimate requests for help, how does that get done? Does it make extra work for you?
Looks like we can advertise soon. Will want to get Larry to approve any advertizing text, and offer suggestions.

--Anthony.Sebastian 14:52, 1 January 2008 (CST)

Thanks, Anthony. The quickest way to check who is subscribed to the list is to check the roster (subscriber password required): http://mail.citizendium.org/mailman/roster/cz-wikiformat (you can get to this directly from the main page; the subscriber list can be accessed from the heading 'Cz-wikiformat Subscribers' at http://mail.citizendium.org/mailman/listinfo/cz-wikiformat)
However, this only lists email addresses and not names of registered users, so I have added you as an admin to the mailing list so you can check the registered members through the Membership Management page. I'll email you the password and how to use this shortly.
Re: Monitoring the list: all emails sent through to the list by non-subscribers will be forwarded first to the list admins. A copy of the body of the email text is sent to the list admin with a link to the approval page (admin password required to log in) and it's fairly easy to tell at first glance if it's spam or a request. I think as a publicly advertised address, and one that permits attachments (am only limiting it to known document formats, however I know that some well-known formats may have viruses) the extra check would stop any spam coming through.
This isn't too much extra work for me: with twenty-five odd lists to track, several of which seem to be on automatic spambot lists, all pending requests are usually dealt with within 24 hours.
Also, if there are people who are going to be regularly using the service, we can add them to an 'approved senders' list so that their emails are automatically sent through and don't need to be held for approval. At least that way a) we already know that their requests are legitimate and b) there won't be any time delay after their request. Not too sure how busy the list will be once advertised, but getting legitimate senders on the approved senders list will keep the workflow moving. Louise Valmoria 17:54, 1 January 2008 (CST)

mailing list permissions

Hi, thanks for your note. I do plan on sending messages pretty regularly, so it would be really helpful to be added to the approved senders list. I'll likely be using two different accounts to send the notes so it would be helpful if you could add both of them to the list. --Joe Quick 20:33, 5 January 2008 (CST)

Style pick-ups

Louise: You are most welcome. One of the things I like about CZ is that everyone is so damn civil! I dropped by this morning expecting someone to have their knickers in a twist about that edit, and, instead, I get a pat. How refreshing. Glad to have you on board with the Psych section...we're a bit short on hands. The more you can contribute, the better!

As for style, etc., what you contributed was just fine. Oone of the failings in Larry's plan is that when you get a bunch of pedants together, we tend to write for each other, and forget that even the Times is written at a 5th grade level!

Well, best, and see you around.

Blessings... --Michael J. Formica 07:34, 8 January 2008 (CST)

Indeed, I enjoy the civility here at CZ as well--I feel it makes it somewhat easier to contribute. And I really do appreciate the stylistic edits; writing for an encyclopedia provides different challenges than what I usually write, and it's an interesting challenge. It's good to work with you. Ciao Louise,

I got your stats on animal coiling. Unfortunately, numbers are not yet large enough. HOWEVER, I plan to continue our poll during next write-a-thon. "The"

Hi! No big deal about the "the". Right now there is a big discussion going on in the Proposals area about the correct titles of articles, as you are probably aware. I don't think, however, that there is any set universal rule or rules that can be applied.... As to the subpage imbroglio, I don't know why this is happening. I *think* everything has been done correctly up to this point, but obviously there's something wrong. I was going to take another look at it. If you haven't fixed it, we can always just revert it and wait for a Guru to come along and fix things.... Best, Hayford Hayford Peirce 10:44, 17 February 2008 (CST)

Hi there! I'm keeping tabs on the proposals discussion, although I do need to review it again. I checked the subpages and managed to work it out; in the metadata page you put the subpages template instead of filling out the checklist. No worries, it's been done before (I do it all the time!!). In any case, the subpages have been fixed now and it's all good. Thanks again. Cheerio, Louise. Louise Valmoria 18:42, 17 February 2008 (CST)

Illustrations needed for skirt article

The past few days, I have been working on the skirt article which you started at the last write-a-thon. My last edit discussed the different methods of tapering the garment, namely, pleats, gores, darts, and gathers. Text-only description in such a case is not really satisfactory. The different methods could use some illustrative examples, either photographic or line-drawing.

Some time back, when I needed to illustrate the knife pleat in connection with the kilt for Wiktionary, I drew the following:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Knife_pleat.jpg

It's not real satisfactory, but the best I could do. Would you be able to help with line drawings (or photos) of the pleat or the other techniques? Personally, I think line drawings would work best except for the gathers.

James F. Perry 11:21, 17 February 2008 (CST)

James, I'm impressed by your additions to this article. I generally start write-a-thon stubs with the intention that collaboration will work its magic, so I don't feel I 'own' this article (or any others I've started, for that matter), but I appreciate the chance to work with you.
Agreed that text-only description of tapers isn't sufficient. I'm happy to help with line drawings for the other techniques; I'll see what I can do and get some feedback from you when they're ready. Feel free to add any line drawings you may have as well to the article, this section is one that is best illustrated. Best, Louise Louise Valmoria 18:49, 17 February 2008 (CST)

One picture (or line drawing) is definitely worth a thousand words here. I will go ahead and upload that line drawing of knife pleats (even though I'm not real happy with it) and I will do my best with the others. If and when you (or someone else) comes up with something better, you can just upload right over the drawings I upload, using the same filename. James F. Perry 20:37, 17 February 2008 (CST)

Suggestion: find someone doing the project, take digital photos along the way. If you want, make drawing from the photos. --Anthony.Sebastian 15:00, 20 February 2008 (CST)
This is a great idea, Anthony. James, your skirt image so far is fine, I'll work on a couple more line-drawings (right now I have to buy another digital camera--my last one kind of fell in some water recently and is now defunct) but I'm willing to work with you on getting some line drawings up and filling out more of the article. I know a couple of sewing machinists, so hopefully they'll be willing to let me follow them around with a digital camera and have some sharp examples for me, as my dress-making skills are really just for a hobby.Louise Valmoria 21:14, 23 February 2008 (CST)

Re opening wiki-converting mailing to non-subscribers

Louise, we have put up the announcement of the word-processor-to-MediaWiki conversion service, and advised potential authors to email their articles as attachments to the mailing list: cz-wikiformat@mail.citizendium.org. Is the mailing open for them to do that? If not, can you make it so.

See Main Page for announcement links, and new page http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Email_us_an_article_in_word_processor_format.

Thanks. --Anthony.Sebastian 14:55, 20 February 2008 (CST)

Excellent, good to see things are moving along (just got the emails from the wiki-format list as well). Have you contacted Robert King to put an update in The Citizen as well? (although it's already on the front page--the more coverage the better)
Have opened up the mailing list for submissions, thanks for the heads-up.Louise Valmoria 18:00, 20 February 2008 (CST)

Whoops. Forgot we already had http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:How_to_submit_articles_in_word_processor_format when I today created http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Email_us_an_article_in_word_processor_format. I like the latter better. Okay if I delete the former? --Anthony.Sebastian 15:10, 20 February 2008 (CST)

Yes, I like the latter better as well--good work on them both, though. Sure, you can delete the former one.Louise Valmoria 18:00, 20 February 2008 (CST)

Re wiki-converting procedures

Louise, should we include adding the 'subpages' template to converted articles? In the procedures header. --Anthony.Sebastian 19:02, 3 March 2008 (CST)

Also, should the converters cc us when emailing the submitter that task completed? So we'll know it's done. --Anthony.Sebastian 19:08, 3 March 2008 (CST)

Anthony, yep, I think having the subpages template added to articles after converting them is reasonable ... otherwise it will just add to the workload of those who clean up the unchecklisted articles every week. Subpages template on the main page, talk page and approval page would make the article creation 'complete'.
Also, having the converters cc us is also a good idea--just checked the wikiconverting page and didn't realise that someone had already (and very swiftly! Impressive) completed Jean-Francois' request.Louise Valmoria 17:27, 4 March 2008 (CST)

Do you agree with Differences between British and American English as a title? I've asked Hayford also. Anyone else you think I should ask? - Ro Thorpe 18:54, 17 March 2008 (CDT)

Yes, I agree. I recall actually typing that in a search engine a few times to find out what the differences are ... so search-wise it seems logical. As for other people you can get an opinion from, perhaps Aleta? Louise Valmoria 19:14, 17 March 2008 (CDT)

Hi Louise, No, I'm not the official approvals manager. As far as I know, there is no official manager. I've been experimenting with different things to see what would get the best results, but haven't implemented anything official yet.

I got bogged down in classes last term, especially over the last few weeks when I was working on finals, but I hope to have more time to devote to thinking about approvals in the coming months. If anything official happens, I'll be sure to let you know. :-) --Joe Quick 12:12, 22 March 2008 (CDT)

Aleta Curry 17:30, 1 April 2008 (CDT)

Too early for liquor? Never! ... actually, coffee would be great. I have just misspelled 'coffee' about three times, which is embarrassing, and I clearly need it to get writing. Thanks Aleta! Louise Valmoria 18:58, 1 April 2008 (CDT)

Redirects and templates

The MediaWiki software ignores any text after a #Redirect, which is why it didn't see your {{speedydelete}} on Nuremburg Chronicle. However... I suggest we keep that redirect in case someone else makes the same (common :-) typo! J. Noel Chiappa 16:19, 2 April 2008 (CDT)

Thanks for the explanation, Noel--I couldn't for the life of me work out why the template wouldn't show up, but the category appeared anyway. Also, that's a good suggestion. I initially looked up weblinks under the misspelled name and found plenty, so it makes sense to keep the redirect. Thanks for your help! Louise Valmoria 23:07, 2 April 2008 (CDT)

Internationalisation part 2

Hi Louise,

The driver of the Internationalisation proposal is back... I've been translating for weeks (a document you may be interested in; Pr Sebastian will soon be able to take care of its publication (in part) in CZ (but see [1]), for details).

So now, I'm back with some changes to the proposal (see this section). Rather than explaining what they are, I'd like to invite you to have a look, and if you think i'm on a good track, to enhance my work. I trust you entirely. Aleta will take a closer look in a few days, but the idea appears interesting to her. She will modify my work.

Other people like G. Leng or John Stephenson may provide good advice as well. If some citizens are likely to help, according to you, feel free to invite them too. I hope to propose a new version of the proposal which will calm all anxieties about the apprehended drain of resources, and to promote the notion of justice that Aleta so eloquently expressed. I think that you had VERY strong point, with the IYL awareness. I really hope that you'll feel at home with the version 2 of the proposal (under construction).

Always willing to help with further tutorials, please let me know what you need. Louise Valmoria 18:32, 29 September 2008 (CDT)

Actinoid colour not functioning

I notice on your uranium template that the Actinides are not highlighted from the other elements. This is an error in the template. I don't see any obvious reason for this not working, I'll check through the template when i have time. Chris Day 04:17, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

I figured out the problem. It is a disconnect between the classified class in Uranium/Periodic table of elements and the template Template:Periodic. The details don't matter but we do need to figure out what is the correct terminology before I go in and fix them all. Are you the right person to ask? Personally I have no clue. At present I have made an ad hoc fix from Actinoid to Actinide since that allows the colours to show up correctly. But then I notice that David has also gone with other names that do not seems to fit with the Actinoid class. For example, he has Berkelium as Trans-Uranium from Rare Earth, but in fact the term that would actually get the colours to light up correctly in the template is Actinide. Which of these three designations makes more sense? Do you know how elements are blocked together by chemists right now? The template:Periodic currently has the rare earths grouped and colour coded as either Lanthanides or Actinides. For this reason the Berkelium should be Actinide too. So what do? Assuming you are still following me. Chris Day 04:58, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes, stil following you. The designation that would make the most sense is Actinide to separate that line of elements from the Lanthanide groups; both Actinides and Lanthanides fall under the category of Rare Earth metals. I'm trying to locate a definitive current standard at the moment. Louise Valmoria 05:07, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
The IUPAC standard dated 22 June 2007 has 'Lanthanoids' and 'Actinoids' here - click on the .pdf document. Though I'm reading references saying there's more recent 2008 standard I am going to dig up before the hour's out. Louise Valmoria 05:17, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh, my. I'm stuck looking at IUPAC's references as they seem to be the definitive standard, but in regards to what to call these, I will defer to David's call on this one. Actinides/oids are radioactive rare earths, lanthanides/oids are rare earths, apparently we have super!rare earths and it's all very fascinating actually--but for the purposes of the template and consistent presentation across all elements pages we need to come to an agreement over which term to use. Louise Valmoria 05:27, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
I have not forgotten this discussion, although I admit it is on a back burner. I have thought of one thing though. David has set up a subpage that defines the class for every element. So actually, there is no need for the class field to be used in the element infobox (at least that would be true with a minor tweak to the template). So what we need to do is clarify the groups we want to define as default (IUPAC guidelines would be best). Then, if there are other secondary groupings, these can be optional and defined by the class field if and when the default class is not appropriate (if that would ever be the case). One example might be do you want the Non Metal elements to be highlighted in the info box or the metalloid elements highlighted. Which would be default and which defined?
