What Is This Thing Called Science? by Alan Chalmers, a philosophy of science book written as an introductory material for students. It describes different approaches to science, explaining the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. It is not about history of science but the book does mention events in the history of science for the sake of having real examples for the scientific approaches. All three editions feature on their cover a drawing of a whisker-less cat. On the third edition's introduction, it is mentioned that the part about the cat is no longer in the book, but it is kept due to popular demand.

  • The first edition published on 1976
  • The second edition published on 1982
  • The third edition was published on 1998
